Effects on Economy
- Food sales declined but in order to satisfy appetites, cigarette sales increased.
- Number of cars on the road increased and gasoline consumption increased.
- Deaths due to starvation: 29 in 1933 and 110 in 1934.
- People feared the rise of Totalitarianism.
Totalitarianism:
People feared the rise of Totalitarianism because after all of the suffering they had already gone through, the last thing they wanted was no freedom and they didn't want their personal lives in the hands of the government.
Farming Effects:
- The Dust Bowl: Topsoil were blown off barren fields and carried by the wind. The driest regions were Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas but soon spread to the entire country. Winds blew around 60 mph.
- By 1934, around 100 million acres of farmland had lost all or most of the topsoil.
1. Hoovervilles: Shacks built by families that could not afford to pay their rent/bills anymore and had to move out of their homes. These shacks were made of cardboard, scrap lumber, and tarpaper.
2. Others who were unemployed left home in search of work. They hitchhiked and hopped onto trains in order to find jobs.
